Recent leases and sales of Crown lands

This page summarises sales and leasing of Crown land for the recent financial quarter (3 months). It also outlines how the department notifies the public under the Community Engagement Strategy.

Leasing Crown land

A lease of Crown land gives the lease holder (tenant) exclusive use over a particular piece of land for a specified term and purpose. Generally, people and organisations seek leases over Crown land where longer-term security of tenure is important to the user of the land. Find out more about leasing Crown land.

Under the Community Engagement Strategy:

  • the department notifies the public of leases on this website (as a minimum)
  • some leases also require additional engagement with the community.

Sale of Crown land

A sale of Crown land takes place after the department assesses it to ensure that the land is not needed for community benefit, government use or state strategic purposes. The department must make sure there are good reasons for the sale and consult the community and stakeholders appropriately. Find out more about the sale of Crown land.

Under the Community Engagement Strategy:

  • we notify the public of proposed sales on this website (at a minimum)
  • we hold a public submissions process before making a decision
  • some sales also require additional engagement.

Direct negotiation for leases or sales

The department assesses all requests for directly negotiated leases or sales rigorously and on a case-by-case basis. We only grant approval where legislation, policy and assessment support the request.

Any negotiation method for the leasing or sale of Crown land considers the intent of the department's Direct negotiations policy for the sale or lease of Crown land (PDF, 289 KB)
