New plan to improve Hume and Hovell Track
The NSW Government is investing more than $337,000 to develop a comprehensive plan for the Hume and Hovell Track to support regional tourism and help it gain international recognition as one of the Great Walks of Australia.
Crown Lands Executive Director of Land and Asset Management Greg Sullivan said the new Strategic Plan will recommend ways to improve the track and promote overnight stays and short walks to attract more people to walk and visit regional communities along its route.
“The Hume and Hovell Track is already one of the best walks in the nation and this $337,900 plan will guide its growing success and future investment in infrastructure along its 426 kilometres to make it even better for bushwalkers and families,” Mr Sullivan said.
“The plan will assess current and potential tourism markets and identify economic opportunities so that regional communities from Yass to Albury can attract more visitors to support local businesses and jobs in their towns.
“The plan will also include opportunities to engage and partner with local Aboriginal communities to potentially deliver cultural projects and experiences on the Track.”
The Hume and Hovell Track attracts countless visitors and the plan will increase the benefits it brings to communities and hopefully lead to it being listed on greatwalksofaustralia.com.au and marketed as a quintessential walking experience.
The strategic plan is being funded by Department of Regional NSW through its Business Case and Strategy Development Fund and developed through a partnership with SMA Tourism (Simon Macarthur and Associates consultants), Snowy Valleys Council and Destination Riverina Murray.
This latest investment follows the completion of the new $617,700 suspension bridge over Coppabella Creek north of Jingellic.
The NSW Government invests about $3 million each year for Crown Lands to upgrade and maintain tracks and trails, including the Hume and Hovell Track, to provide bushwalking and camping in some of NSW’s most beautiful locations.
