Hughie Wilson Oval upgrade popular with sports groups
A new amenities building at Hughie Wilson Oval in Forbes has been a hit, substantially improving the experience of cricket and football players, and prompting a number of sporting groups to want to hold more events at the recreational reserve.
The amenities block has proved popular following a $429,000 NSW Government investment through Crown Lands, further supported by a $8,867 contribution from Forbes Shire Council which managed the project.
The new building, which replaced a 40-year-old prefabricated facility, opened last November with accessible change rooms and toilets, and a separate change room for umpires or referees.
The amenities building has been designed to also withstand floods by allowing floodwater to flow through if needed, although it remained above water in the September-October 2022 floods.
Minister for Lands and Property and Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said the major upgrade at Hughie Wilson Oval has been a game changer for local sporting clubs.
The Council reports it has helped Forbes District Cricket Association and Forbes Touch Association hold fixtures, and Forbes Magpies can also use the new amenities which also help support Spooner Oval next door.
“It’s great to know that this upgrade is helping transform the experience of local sports groups and residents who use the recreational reserve at Hughie Wilson Oval,” Mr Kamper said.
“Upgrading facilities on Crown reserves supports jobs, injects money into local economies, and helps community and sporting organisations as well as regional tourism.”
