We're making great strides in achieving the goals we've set in Crown land 2031. We've been laying the groundwork for big changes and future wins. 

Our Crown land year in review reports provide an update on the work we've done and highlight the big gains we made during each financial year.

Focus area 1 – Public value framework

1.1 Build and test a public value frameworkCompleteWe've developed a framework to show how Crown land is valued, measured, and used in decisions. We'll keep improving it as we learn more.
1.2 Develop a set of measures for reporting on the public value generated by the Crown estateCompleteThe first set of measures, as outlined in the value of Crown land infographic within Crown land year in review 2023-24 (PDF, 3.5 MB), will be expanded as our data grows.
1.3 Embed public value tools and instruments to support decision-making in the access and use of the Crown estateIn progressWe're developing new tools to evaluate the public value of different uses and management options for Crown land. This will help us better incorporate public value into our decisions.
Focus area 2 – Aboriginal land rights, land ownership and native title

2.1 Work with Aboriginal people to create opportunitiesCompleteWe aim to support Aboriginal employment and grow Aboriginal businesses. The Department has updated its Aboriginal Procurement Strategy.
2.2 Establish policies and practices that recognise Aboriginal cultural heritageIn progressWe're recording Aboriginal sites in our asset register to better manage and protect them in partnership with Aboriginal people. The project's scope and timeframe have been revised.
2.3 Deliver resources and trainingCompleteWe've improved our Crown land manager training to educate about Aboriginal land rights and connection to Country. This included updating materials, creating videos, and holding training sessions and workshops.
Focus area 3 – Data and information availability

3.1 Identify system and data improvements CompleteWe've created a strategy and framework to improve data transparency and access. A working group is enhancing data quality and availability for better customer experience and decision-making.
3.2 Improve integration with other systems CompleteWe've found ways to improve data integration and set up a register to track and prioritise projects. We'll prioritise based on business needs, budget, and resources.
3.3 Make more departmental data and spatial information accessible CompleteWe've increased the availability of data and spatial information for customers and stakeholders. Crown land data is now on the NSW Planning Portal, and a self-service webpage allows online searches and access. A data strategy guides ongoing improvements to share data better.
Focus area 4 – Asset management and land allocation reform

4.1 Design and begin delivery of a prioritised asset management frameworkIn progressWe're using an asset management framework to guide investments and manage assets strategically. We're following our first Strategic Asset Management Plan for Crown land. Next, we'll develop a detailed asset register and lifecycle management for directly managed assets.
4.2 Develop strategies for investment in Crown landCompleteWe've developed a plan to work with partners and communities to unlock opportunities and maximise public value. This plan ensures Crown land assets and services provide appropriate returns to the people of NSW.
4.3 Develop a climate change adaptation planIn progressWe're finalising our first climate change adaptation plan, which will be released soon. It outlines actions we will take to mitigate risks and adapt to climate change. The plan combines existing and new programs and aims to embed climate considerations in our decision-making.
4.4 Design and deliver training, tools and assistance programs for Crown land managersIn progressWe've provided tools and training materials to support Crown land managers. We've also reviewed our current manager network. The findings are now being used to create a road map for better future support.
Focus area 5 – Customer experience

5.1 Develop and apply a strategy to optimise customer serviceCompleteWe've developed a customer service strategy to focus on customer needs. It was informed by a customer needs analysis, with insights from over 3,000 customers.
5.2 Review and reform customer transactionsCompleteWe're partnering with Service NSW to streamline customer experience, with online forms, a new licensing matrix, and faster processing for permits and Crown road purchases.
5.3 Give customers clearer guidanceIn progressNext steps: We're improving our website information and navigation for clearer guidance. The timeframe has been extended to review, organise, and optimise all content for usability.
5.4 Contribute to regional tourismIn progressWe held stakeholder workshops to create a practical tourism approach for Crown land, aiming to deliver social and economic benefits for NSW. We're developing a tourism action plan to guide decisions and support regional tourism.
