Vital part of Hume and Hovell Track reopens

15 Jun 2023

The NSW Government has reopened a vital 46-kilometre stretch of the Hume and Hovell Track from Boundary Road close to Talbingo on the Snowy Mountains Highway through to Junction Campsite near Tumbarumba.

The work is a milestone in track rehabilitation after the 2019-2020 bushfires and has allowed 227 kilometres of uninterrupted bushwalking from Boundary Road near Talbingo to the Victorian border.

The section includes the impressive Buddong Falls in the Kosciuszko National Park and the picturesque Paddys River Dam Campsite through Bago Forest.

Crown Lands commissioned a maintenance team to clear fallen trees, branches and debris and cut overgrowth. New boardwalks, hundreds of marker posts and bollards replaced those damaged in the bushfires.

Reopening this 46 kilometre link will benefit bushwalkers and also families who want to relax in the great outdoors, allowing them to explore Bago Forest with all its camping, picnicking and hiking.

Ongoing work to maintain and improve the Hume and Hovell Track is providing communities with more options for recreation in their local area and will attract more tourists and visitors who spend money in shops and cafes, supporting regional jobs.

The reopening of the track section will support the return of the Hume & Hovell Ultra event which will be happening in October and includes this portion of the track.

The NSW Government also replaced the bridge over Burra Creek last September. A new suspension bridge over Coppabella Creek near Tumbarumba was completed last November  providing bridges over all permanent creeks and uninterrupted bushwalking from Boundary Road to the Hovell Tree in Albury.
