Gosangs Tunnel and Mermaids Inlet re-open after major repair works
A major project has been completed to improve safety and facilitate the re-opening to the public of the popular Gosangs Tunnel and Mermaids Inlet at Abrahams Bosom Reserve on the South Coast.
The natural attractions near Currarong had been closed to the public since June 2022 after heavy rain made rock areas unstable for walkers.
Crown Lands commissioned geotechnical studies and engaged NSW Public Works to procure a qualified contractor to carry out repair work.
The $694,844 project was undertaken by engineering contractor The Rix Group. Work included rock bolting, rock propping, removing loose rocks, and erecting signs and barrier fencing where needed.
The project has bolstered the stability of rocky areas and will allow members of the public to once again enjoy the natural wonders.
Gosangs Tunnel and Mermaids Inlet are among the most unique public attractions on the South Coast. Visitors who are prepared for an adventure are rewarded with awe-inspiring and breathtaking ocean views.
Gosangs Tunnel is a natural geological fault that created a 20 metre opening from a walking track to a rock ledge overlooking the ocean. The adjacent Mermaids Inlet is an informal track along the rock face that opens to a large lower rock platform.
Alongside the extensive work to re-open Gosangs Tunnel and Mermaids Inlet, Crown Lands has undertaken $150,000 in upgrades to about 1 kilometre of bush walking trails at Abrahams Bosoms Reserve.
The work has repaired degraded sections of track and installed sandstone stepping blocks so bushwalkers, fishers, outdoor enthusiasts and families can safely enjoy everything this pristine coastal nature reserve has to offer.
